A Letter from Derek & Melissa
Greetings from Alaska! After many years of infertility, we are excited to welcome our first child through adoption. We are an adventurous couple who enjoys the great outdoors. Our home is a loving, stable and safe place in which your child can grow and prosper. We promise that every day they will have fun and learn something new. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us.
We are high school sweethearts who grew up across the street from each other who have now been married for ten wonderful years. We were both raised in Christian households and love being active in our church.
On the weekends you can find us kayaking, skiing and exploring the world around us. We also enjoy going to the movies or getting massages to relax.
While we cherish time spent together as a couple, we are excited for family time with our future son or daughter. That includes building snowmen and pillow forts with them, reading stories and going on family trips. Family devotion time is an evening tradition we look forward to with our kids.
Derek is a patient man of God. He’s easygoing, forgiving and doesn’t get riled up when problems arise. He enjoys quiet outdoor activities, especially in rainy weather, and has a playful personality.
Children are drawn to Derek’s mischievous antics like juggling and magic tricks. Having grown up with several younger siblings, he already has some parenting skills. Derek is looking forward to teaching our kids how to make his famous No Bake Cookies!
Derek loves learning and has many self-taught skills. Numbers and big-picture puzzles are his specialties. Though he started as a union electrician, he’s quickly worked up to project management and electrical design. He’s our family’s designated helper for future math and science homework.
Melissa has never met a stranger! People are drawn to her zest for life and easy laugh. Children enjoy her bubbly personality.
Melissa is passionate about community involvement. Her volunteer activities have included serving at the hospital and church nursery. She currently mentors teens transitioning out of homelessness. Some of her favorite activities include crafting projects and enjoying a good book.
Organization and planning are her specialties. For years she’s been saving ideas and activities for our kids. She’s excited to chaperone school field trips and host play dates. She looks forward to spontaneous puppet shows and musical performances with our kids.
We love family time! Most of Derek’s family lives locally. We hang out with them multiple times a month to play cards, watch movies, go camping and much more.
Some of Melissa’s family lives nearby, and many live in other states. When we aren’t able to be together on birthdays and holidays, we open presents over FaceTime. It’s become a fun tradition!
With relatives all over the country, we frequently travel for holidays. We’ll either meet at someone’s house or at a vacation destination. Every few years, we take a family sailing trip to the Caribbean.
Everyone is excited to welcome your child into the family! They will be the loudest cheering section in whatever activity your child chooses to pursue. Be it sports, theater, science or anything in between!
We live in a three-bedroom home next to a babbling brook. Our street ends with a cul-de-sac, where you can find the neighborhood kids playing.
We own a five-acre property in a peaceful area surrounded by beauty and nature. It’s located next to our region’s top recreation destination, complete with mountains and a large lake. In summer, we take out the canoe and mountain bikes. In winter, we strap on ice skates and skis.
We are currently building our dream home there. Our future yard has plenty of room for a swing set, lawn games, a fire pit and vegetable garden. We look forward to hosting community BBQs with our tight-knit neighborhood. It will be a fantastic place to grow up!
We promise to provide a stable home environment for your child where they can grow, learn and experience all that life has to offer. We are committed to building a long lasting, loving family. We are ready for whatever life brings our way as new parents.
Your child will be raised in the church and taught core values like integrity and kindness. Education is important to us. Your child will be raised with a love of learning at all stages of life.
We promise your child will have a loving knowledge about you from day one. We look forward to having an open relationship with you and sharing visits, photos, and letters at the frequency you desire.

More About Our Family
We live in the state of...
Forget any myths you’ve heard about Alaska. We aren’t isolated, and we don’t live in igloos or travel by sled dog. Haha!
Having lived in multiple states, we always enjoy our home state the best. The scenery is breathtaking. Every weekend brings a new adventure. One day we’re floating the creek, the next, we’re backpacking to a glacier.
In addition to city conveniences, our town also boasts nearly 300 miles of trails, 250 parks, and over 80 playgrounds. Alaska is a wonderful place to raise children!
People here are friendly and helpful. Our school district is home to the top three most ethnically and racially diverse high schools in the nation.
Our Special Interests
We enjoy playing all kinds of games: cards, board games, yard games, video games. We complete several jigsaw puzzles a year, then frame them for wall art. Derek likes woodworking with hand tools. Melissa loves crafting. Her current favorite project is using Derek’s wood shavings to create wreaths. For quiet time, we both enjoy curling up with a good book.
Religion plays a key role in our home. We participate in a local congregation and strive to have Christ-centered lives. Having grown up in Christian households, we look forward to attending church as a family. We will teach your child how to study God’s word and think critically about spiritual matters.
Good morals will be the foundation for raising our children. They will be taught to love and respect all people. Values such as honesty, generosity, and forgiveness will be key in their upbringing.
Our Loved Ones
We have close friends and family in 20 states! Having these connections around the country makes it easy for us to visit you over the years. Our parents have had lengthy marriages, as have many of our friends and extended family members. What a great example for our future children!
