Working with a Birth Mother
In an open adoption, the birth mother chooses the adoptive parents for her baby. She considers what is important to her and the type of family she sees her child growing up in. Many African American women prefer that an African American or bi-racial family adopts their baby or child. She may feel that a black couple will be able to understand some of the unique challenges an African American child will encounter. African American adoptive parents may also be able to expose the child to culture and heritage more effectively.
We have found that black and bi-racial families interested in African American newborns are normally matched with a birth mother within a few months. Many of the birth mothers we work with specifically ask for an African American or bi-racial couples to adopt their baby. We assist birth mothers with children up to age six. If there is a sibling group, we will only place together as we feel that the bond should not be broken.
